Nichola’s skincare commandments

Every beauty junkie worth her salt knows there’s no point perfecting her make-up technique if her skin is in poor condition. Skincare guru and facialist to the stars, Nichola Joss, gives her top tips for getting radiant looking skin:

1. Watch what you put into your body. You can’t expect to have radiant skin if your diet lacks essential nutrients.

 2. Exfoliate the skin (face and body) once or twice a week. But be sure not to scratch the skin – the less granular the product the better.

 3. Give yourself a lymphatic massage every morning and evening while cleansing. This will help clear the skin of toxins, stimulate the muscle fibres and can reduce the appearance of dark under eye circles. It only needs to be three to four minutes long, but it will make a difference.

 4. Make sure you cleanse your skin properly. Apply a cream or liquid cleanser liberally to your hands then start the massage by sweeping in small circles away from the chin and up towards the ears, nose and forehead.

 5. Achieve a really deep clean by using the same product or an oil based cleanser or milk product after removing make-up with the creamy cleanser. Remove with a muslin cloth or cotton pads.

 6. Be careful to avoid pulling the skin when moisturising as this will cause damage. Always apply skincare products to your fingers and work through your hands first to avoid damaging friction on the skin.

 7. Use a facial water or toner to remove any remaining dirt. Spray onto cotton pads then gently wipe up and out across the face.

 8. Ensure your day moisturiser contains an SPF of at least 15 to protect the skin from UVA and UVB damage, which are a major cause of premature ageing.

 9. Use a specially designed serum or balm around the eye area where the skin is thinner and therefore more delicate. Don’t put product too near the eye.

 10. Invest in a specific night time moisturiser and an oil treatment to boost skin while it regenerates as you sleep.
